If the wall has an excellent foundation, it will not shrink or crack. As for the caulk vs. mortar method, you need to consult with the code officials and manufacturer to see if caulk is an approved method in your application. Always check with the manufacturer when you have a question as to *how* to use it. Failure to do this could void a warranty.
